Senior London Lib Dems call for “decisive action” after attempted antisemitic attack in North London.
Responding to the news of an attempted arson attack at the Finchley Reform Synagogue in the early hours of Wednesday 15th April, Liberal Democrat spokesperson for London Luke Taylor MP said:
"It is heartbreaking that the Jewish community in London is once again coming to terms with an attempted antisemitic attack, just weeks after the events at the Hatzolah Ambulance Station.
"The rise of hate crime in this city is unacceptable and not inevitable - the Metropolitan Police need more resources to monitor vulnerable neighbourhoods and protect our communities.
"Those responsible for these attacks should have no safe haven in London. The Met acted at commendable pace to catch the perpetrators of Hatzolah, and I’m sure they will make every effort to do the same now.
“These hateful people must be found and brought to justice - anything less would be a betrayal not just of the Jewish community but of everyone in London facing the threat of hate, and of the values of tolerance and diversity for which our city stands.”
Liberal Democrat Group Leader on the London Assembly, Hina Bokhari, added:
"London must always be a city where people of every faith feel safe to live, worship, and belong.
“This attempted attack could have been catastrophic had those petrol bombs ignited, but even without that, its impact will be deeply felt, especially coming so soon after other attacks on Jewish communities and amid record levels of antisemitism.
“Solidarity alone is not enough, words on paper are not enough. We need decisive action to bring communities together, confront hatred wherever it appears, and ensure there is no place for this kind of violence and division in our city.”
